The Next Time You Cut Your Finger, Save a Life
Ten thousand people need bone marrow transplants each year to fight life-threatening diseases, but only half of them get one. Graham Douglas, who works at ad agency Droga5, came up with a unique solution to get more donors: Stick a sign-up kit inside a Band-Aid box. When people cut their finger and goes hunting for a Band-Aid, they can just dab some of the blood on a Q-tip-like swab, drop it in an envelope already included in the kit, and put it in the mail to the lab.

Hustlin’: How I Became My Own Mentor in a Freelance Economy

The fact is, freelance is becoming the new 9-to-5, whether we want it to or not. Tom Fisher, writing in the Huffington Post, reports that “contingent workforce,” meaning the self-employed, freelancers, or “accidental entrepreneurs” laid off from full-time positions, will make up between 40 and 45 percent of the workforce by 2020 and become a majority by 2030.

As the “contingent” workforce grows, we need to embrace the freelance hustle.

Can a Font Help a City Make a Comeback?
Designers in Chattanooga, Tennessee have distilled the city’s burgeoning creative spirit into a typeface called Chatype. The goal is to help the city and its businesses forge a distinct and cohesive identity through custom typeface, sending a visual message to the world that Chattanooga—a rapidly growing city in the midst of a creative renaissance—is “more than just your average Southern town.”

“If you think of a brand as a story, [Chattanooga] has an amazing story,” Trischler says. “If you look at the visual brand, it doesn’t back up that story.” Perhaps the sleek new font can help tell that story a little better.

“What’s changing is people are starting to realize that these large intractable
problems, the school system or whatever else, they don’t just have to be
addressed with large policy and billions of dollars. They can be addressed with
small teams of slightly crazy people, trying to do something disruptive.” Salman Khan, Khan Academy
